Early US political leaders were wary of "entangling alliances" with other nations. Most Americans regarded the country's geographic isolation as something to rejoice in. "Isolationism" has long been a powerful current of public opinion -- indeed it dominated foreign policy until World War II. One aspect of isolationism was a fear that America's East-Coast power elite (the anglophile financiers and industrialists in league with the old wealthy families of New England, New York and Pennsylvania) might cede parts of American sovereignty to international organizations. Or they might simply pay too much mind to the opinions of influential European leaders rather than to the wishes of ordinary Americans.
These fears are still potent, especially in the south and west of the nation. Thus any feeling that an American politician is too "European" in his outlook can cost him at the polls. Both George W. Bush and John Kerry are scions of influential East-Coast families. This automatically makes them suspect in the eyes of a vociferous minority of Americans. Bush, however, has gone to great lengths to "texanize" himself, cultivating a plain-folks regular-guy public image.
